Phoenix Expands Electric Bike and Scooter Programs

Phoenix Expands Electric Bike and Scooter Programs - GOTRAX

After the recent hiccups with shared e-scooter riding, it seems like micro-mobility programs around the world are starting to expand again. While we just discussed the introduction of a new shared e-scooter program in Sydney, electric bike and electric scooter rental programs in Phoenix, Arizona are also expanding.

Phoenix made great strides in their e-scooter rental setup in January of last year by making the program permanent. This year, they’re testing extended hours for the program and gauging ridership during these new operating times.

Previously, shared e-scooter and e-bikes could be used from about 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. every day. Now, the city is trying out a 24/7 rental program. The program isn’t being expanded without any limitations, though: riders who want to hop on a shared electric ride between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. will need to take a reaction test to make sure they’re fit to ride, helping to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. In addition, riders may still only ride shared e-scooters and e-bikes within the boundary limits of the program, and the vehicles will disable themselves if taken into a no ride zone.

We’re super excited to see another shared electric vehicle program expand and flourish like this. Micro-mobility vehicles are a great source of transportation at all times of day, and a 24/7 program makes micro-mobility more accessible to even more potential riders; after all, people have a wide variety of schedules, and a more flexible timing ensures that riders of all kinds can take advantage of these rentals. The reaction test is an ideal way to ensure that riders are aware, alert, and unimpaired as well. While the program will be testing this hour expansion for 6 months, we hope that this change proves successful and encourages similar, possibly even permanent changes in other programs.

As always, whether you ride a shared e-scooter, a personal e-bike, or anything in between, just remember to stay safe, follow the rules of the road, and always wear a helmet!
