Electric scooters are a great way to get to class, stores, and work, especially for those who need a last-mile solution after taking a car, bus, or train part of the way to their destination. We often talk about how our e-scooters are lightweight and portable, making them easy to store and carry. However, even among the lightest rides in our lineup, there’s a surprising amount of variation in the weight of different e-scooters. This can make it difficult to tell what a “light,” “standard,” or “heavy” weight for an e-scooter might actually be. To help you understand e-scooter weights and find an answer to what a lightweight scooter really is, we’ve taken a deep dive into the factors that impact the weight of different scooters.
How Much Does an Electric Scooter Weigh?
Most of our scooters, especially those intended for commuting, weigh anywhere from about 26 to 46 pounds. All of the scooters in this range should be portable enough for the average rider, but the lightest scooters are especially ideal for those who expect to carry their ride for a while.
Our other scooters, those that have a more bike-like shape or those that make use of two motors, tend to weigh a bit more. Flex seated e-scooters, for example, range from 43-63 pounds, while our performance e-scooters come in at anywhere from 76-94 pounds.
What Determines an E-Scooter's Weight?
So what is it that makes some scooters more heavy? The answer lies in the components. Bigger batteries, more powerful motors, and other upgraded features will give you longer, faster, and more comfortable rides, but they sacrifice some portability in the process. These heavier scooters can still feature foldable frames or handlebars for ease of storage, but you won’t want to take them with you on long bus rides or up and down multiple flights of stairs.
What Kind of E-Scooter Should You Get?
If you’ve got a rough or steep ride ahead of you, or if you're looking for an e-scooter that offers the best possible specs, you may want to consider a scooter that’s built more for performance, like the GX3: with these scooters, the bigger frame and more powerful components (such as dual motors, dual suspension, and larger batteries) will ensure a fast, smooth, and stable ride, even on bumpier roads.
However, if you’re going to be hopping between the road and public transportation or hauling your ride by hand for a while, consider a lighter scooter, such as the GXL V2. Though their specs aren’t at the same level as those of a performance-focused scooter, our lighter scooters still offer plenty of speed and range—enough to easily take you to your destination without adding too much extra weight.
And if you're looking for a mix of both, you can always try one of our bigger commuter scooters, like the G5. These scooters provide more power than our lightest scooters while still maintaining a level of portability. They're the perfect middle ground for riders who are looking for a higher-performing scooter that they'll still be able to carry with relative ease.
This is part of the beauty of e-scooters: there are so many models that come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, letting you pick out a ride that suits your needs. No matter what scooter you ride, whether big or small, portable or powerhouse, just remember to put safety first, follow the rules of the road, and always wear your helmet!
